Ten Steps to Talk Yourself into Writing a Book

Have you ever wanted to write a book? Have you tried and failed? The truth is, many people want to write books but do not follow through. It can be difficult for some people to talk themselves into writing a book. If you are struggling with this issue, then maybe these tips will help get the gears turning in your mind.

  • Step-1: Make sure it’s something that really interests you- if there isn’t an emotional investment in what you’re writing about, then the quality of your work will reflect that lack of interest.
  • Step-2: Find out what other authors who have written similar books are doing- see how they promote their work and use social media outlets like Facebook or Twitter to make connections with readers who are interested in the same types of books.
  • Step-3: Get a good idea of how much work it takes to write a book- know going in that you’re not just going to be able to sit down and pump out a bestseller, but then again this shouldn’t stop you either.
  • Step-4: Start writing and don’t stop- once you have a good idea of what you want to write about, put your pen to paper (or fingers on the keyboard) and start creating.
  • Step-5: Get someone who understands what you’re trying to do- one of the best ways to keep yourself motivated and on task is by having a friend or family member write with you.
  • Step-6: Stop second-guessing yourself- if you’re not sure about the advice that someone has given, then just ask them to clarify.
  • Step-7: Set a daily goal and stick to it- what this means is that you should set aside some time every day just for writing.

  • Step-9: Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it- there are numerous groups online on Facebook and Reddit that can offer support, motivation, connections with other people who want to write books.
  • Step-10: Don’t stress out over the little things- there will always be a problem or obstacle that you need to overcome, but if you’re constantly worrying about it then nothing is going to get accomplished.
